I get great pleasure from floral subjects, since my work is usually of landscapes. The colourful, vibrant, narrow focus is such a contrast. These anemones are a good example. Their colours and shapes are a delight in themselves, but are made more entrancing by the way that they seem to be reflected in the design of the jug that holds them.

That jug has held so many flowers through its life, having been passed through several generations of my family.

As many artists have shown us, small groups of people in pubs, clubs, and cafes, just living their lives, can provide us with such colour and such humour. For me, Beryl Cook is one of the best modern artists to do so, and I feel happy to see reflections of her work in my own.

So where have they been, and why such wonderful hats? And is it me that they’re talking about, or could it be you?

Harlech Castle

For me, both personally and as an artist, Harlech is one of the most attractive of castles in Wales, my family’s country. It stands out so proudly in the vast environment that surrounds it, and is so immensely a part of the landscape.

It is strange to think that the sea lapped at its toes when it first was built. How the whole area must have changed over the millennia.

The contrast between the connecting vines and the colourful lavender at this local vineyard is so attractive.

I always feel that this little corner of Shropshire is such a lovely place to paint, and in that I am not alone.
