With no hills or buildings to act as markers, everything sometimes seems to just fall into almost tangible layers of colour. This scene is typical of Betsy’s strong use of watercolours, emphasising their fluidity and transparency. It reflects her love of vibrant colour, and also a love of texture, which she developed and employed skilfully in fabric design, long before becoming a watercolourist.
