This illustration is in the book about Christmas by Dorothy Nicolle, and is a wonderful example of Maggie's powerful and quite distinct style of illustration, capturing the mood of the moment, and the spirit of the season.

Emma has captured the gentle Shropshire scene which lies just feet from her door, with her father’s pedigree Holstein herd at work, doing what they do best - eat grass.

Cows have grazed this field for many decades whilst Emma’s family have farmed it. It’s still known as “the allotments”, which is what it was used for during the First World War, helping to keep Broseley locals in good supply of basic needs.

Now, it is green and quiet, as is so much of the county. As Emma says, “Shropshire is a well kept secret and is a beautiful backcloth on which to paint”.

The black family cat often sits here in the farmhouse porch, looking through the geraniums to the garden beyond.

Emma’s family have farmed here, at the top of the slopes to the Ironbridge Gorge, for over a hundred years. It still is a constant source of inspiration for her.
